Does blogging feel daunting, overwhelming or hard for you?
Does it seem like that one thing on your “to-do” list that just keeps hanging around?
You know you should be blogging more, you want to — but where to start, what to write about and how?
Not only can blogging be incredibly fun – but it is a huge opportunity to express yourself in writing, showcase your photography, attract dream clients, build your SEO, write tutorials to connect with fellow photographers, and show your personal side. The possibilities are endless when it comes to your blog.
Here are a few tips to help you create rocking blog posts.
1. Take notes
This seems to be a “no-brainer.” I take a lot of notes for many aspects of my photography – but taking notes for blogging is crucial. I have paper and pen stashed all throughout my house. Personally, my best thinking happens all over the house (the shower, the treadmill or while cooking dinner). I have paper and pen handy for when my next best idea hits.
2. Just like your photography — practice
Even if you don’t publish all of your posts, getting in the act of writing out your thoughts, ideas or recent sessions is great practice. Writing daily in some form is also great practice. Journaling is a great way to do this. Getting your thoughts out on paper could spark potential blog post ideas or projects.
3. Edit, edit, edit
When I was a journalist, we used to have multiple sets of eyes on stories for editing, fact checking and looking for typos and errors. A good rule I follow now: read your blog, out loud, three times. If you have time for someone to look it over, that’s even better. If you are unsure about something, look it up.
4. Be consistent
You don’t have to post every single day to be consistent. Can you imagine all of the work that would be? But why not set a goal to blog twice a week or three times a week? From there you could come up with a weekly blog post or project. I think remaining consistent and setting deadlines go hand in hand. I am incredibly deadline- and goal-oriented, and setting goals and deadlines helps me stay on track for publishing posts.
5. Find the right content
Blogging is the best way to showcase new sessions and your most recent photography, talk about how it went and to reach new potential clients. But there is also room to share current personal projects, tutorials or maybe your ideas or thoughts about the photography industry. With that said, try to avoid ranting or venting and always stick with what you know.
6. Have fun
Don’t make blogging a chore; have fun with it! The more you write about what you love and the things about which you are most passionate, the more your posts will resonate with others.
