“What’s in My Bag” posts and lists are very popular and usually include gear items. This list is different; it’s like insurance. You may never need these items for your session, but a time may come when you need just a little extra something and you’ll be glad you have one of these in your bag… or all of them!
1. Sparklers
Definitely reserve these for older children that can handle sparkler action. The ambient light from the sparkler creates a warm or cool glow depending on the type you use, so try using them at dusk or right after sunset. You can also experiment with slow shutter speeds for light-writing.
2. Cool Sunglasses
I have fallen in LOVE with these heart shades from Urban Outfitters. They would be the perfect extra something for a senior session or even little children. Be sure to keep them in a pouch in your bag to avoid scratches!
3. Bubbles
What kid doesn’t love bubbles? Craft and party stores sell large-quantity packages of individual-sized bubbles so you can always keep a few in your bag and then toss them when the session is over. For added cuteness and interaction, have mom or dad blow the bubbles toward the kiddos!
4. Play Camera
Having a small, interactive toy like this adorable play camera is the perfect thing to have when dealing with a shy child. They can pretend to be the photographer while you’re getting un-posed and authentic pictures of them having fun.
5. Colored Paper
Slide a few sheets of colored paper in your bag and the possibilities are endless! Fold up a few for paper airplanes, or wad them up for a paper ball fight. It takes up hardly any room and won’t weigh down your bag.
6. Bubble Gum
Keep a few pieces of bubble gum in your bag for those times when a child is feeling extra silly. Ask them to blow the biggest bubble possible and give bonus points to a sibling who will reach in to pop it. Just make sure the wind isn’t blowing too hard!
7. Confetti/Glitter
Blowing glitter or confetti shots are always fun. I prefer confetti since the pieces are smaller and less likely to end up inside my camera, but glitter can work well with a long lens. Make sure there is good light in the sky to ensure your glitter or confetti sparkles, and so that your shutter speed can be high to freeze the action.
8. Nikon D750
No camera bag should be without a dependable, full-feature camera like Nikon’s new D750. With upgrades like built-in WiFi, a tilting LCD, and 51 autofocus points, you’re sure to get the shot!
