Ray Flash Universal Ring Flash Adapter

affordable light modifier

The Ray Flash Universal Ringflash Adapter is a small, portable, and affordable product that will help you achieve the high fashion style lighting you previously could only  achieve with studio flash equipment.

Designed to be lightweight and very portable, the Ray Flash Adapter’s only requirement is your camera’s hot shoe flash. It works with any camera and any brand of speed light. Because of its shape, it produces an almost shadow-free look with soft, even light that wraps around your subject.

The adapter simply slides over the front of your camera’s speed light and locks into place. The connector to the speed light fits snugly and if you need it to, actually extends for taller speed lights. Flash tubes, batteries or electronics aren’t needed, which makes the adapter portable to any location. It is also relatively flat, making slipping it into your camera bag easy and convenient.

I’m a fan of not only the soft light it produces, but also that it doesn’t change the color of the light coming from your speed light. It also works perfectly with TTL and manual mode on your flash.

Loss of light is at a minimum as well. The Ray Flash Universal Ringflash Adapter is one of the best modifiers I’ve seen that works without losing the typical two stops I’ve come to expect with other light modifiers I’ve used.

Overall, I think this handy ring flash adapter seems like a great alternative to a dedicated circular flash unit. The catch lights are circular like a larger light but they have a slight break at the top. It measures 14.9 x 9.9 x 3 inches and weighs in at 1.6 pounds. Retailing for $139.99, it is a very affordable way to achieve the beautiful soft light that ring flashes are known for.
