7 tips for summer makeup that looks great on camera

If you’re photographing clients outside, it can be hard for them (and you) to stay looking fresh through the whole shoot. Here are my best tips for summer makeup!

Summer is here!

School’s out, and the days are filled with fun adventures. But with summer comes the heat.

Whether it’s a dry or humid climate, odds are you’ve found it hard to look your best. And if you’re shooting clients outside, it can be hard for them to stay looking fresh through their whole shoot.

It can be hard to get makeup to stay put in the heat. And the approach to summer makeup is completely different from winter makeup where you don’t have to worry about your makeup running down your face.

Here are my favorite tips for gorgeous summer makeup that stays put and looks great on camera.

1. Less is more for the skin.

In the heat and humidity, your makeup can melt down your face, which is not a good look for anyone. I always use cream and liquid products that are water resistant and I tend to be minimal with what I use.

For your foundation, use something that will even out the skin but still have it look fresh and natural. I love foundations for the face and body because they look like skin and tend to be water resistant. Try Make Up For Ever’s Water Blend Foundation or MAC Cosmetic’s Face and Body foundation. They both have buildable coverage so you add more where you need it to cover up blemishes or discoloration.

Use a water resistant concealer to brighten under the eyes and hide any blemishes or dark spots. I love Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof 12 hour concealer for flawless coverage that lasts. And skip the powder – glowing, dewy skin is in!

2. Bronzer is a must.

I love to use a cream or liquid bronzer to make skin look tan and glow. Apply your bronzer on the high points of the face where the sun would naturally hit you; think forehead, bridge of nose, cheeks and cheekbones, chin, jawline and front of throat.

My favorite summer bronzers are RMS Beauty’s Buriti Bronzer and Giorgio Armani’s Maestro Liquid Summer.

3. Color is key.

Add color to your cheeks and lips with a multi-tasking product. It will help your makeup look fresh and healthy. Plus, it’s quick and easy for when you’re in a rush. I love Becca’s Beach Lip and Blush tints (try Guava!) and Nars The Multiple (Orgasm and Na Pali Coast are gorgeous!).

4. Simple eyes.

Keep eyes simple and mesmerizing with a waterproof bronzy or champagne color cream shadow. Creams and shadow pencils are so easy to apply, you can apply and blend with your fingers. And once they dry, they are crease proof.

Apply one of these gorgeous shades all over your lid and into the crease. My favorite eye shades for summer are Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Cream in Golden Copper and Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick Eye Color in Rose Gold and Sand Glow.

5. Stick with waterproof.

Make your eyes pop with two coats of a black waterproof mascara. Try Urban Decay’s Cannonball Ultra Waterproof Mascara.

6. Set it and forget it.

Set your makeup with a setting spray that will make it last through all your summer activities. Spritz Urban Decay’s Chill Cooling and Hydrating Makeup Setting Spray all over your face to keep your makeup looking fresh.

7. Add some fun lips.

To add some extra fun to your look, or for those romantic summer nights, use a bright lip color to brighten your face. Some of my summer favorites are Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Timanfaya (mandarin orange red), Yu (bright fuschia) or Luxembourg (watermelon).

Apply one coat, blot with a tissue, and then apply a second coat for long lasting power.

With these hot weather makeup tips, you’ll be looking gorgeous all summer long. And you can be confident that your clients will be looking fresh and beautiful in their photos when you share these tips with them!
